ThredUp

Used to Saved

Spin the idea of your typical fast-fashion social media haul by using ThredUp. Contrast an environmentally passive influencer with a more conscious one, all while highlighting the true environmental costs of buying new, typically cheaper, clothes.

The IDea

The Anti Haul

“Hauls”, AKA showing off boxes worth of freshly purchased clothes, isn’t uncommon to see across social media apps.

Influencers will share every detail about the newest items to ensure their followers can buy the same pieces they own.

In a anti-haul of sorts, our hauls will instead highlight the true ecological cost of the fast fashion industry.

“Energy Used, Energy Saved.” :30

This spot starts with a big bag of clothes dropping down from the top of the frame. An exaggerated influencer then pops into the frame from the left side and the haul begins.

GIRL:          Hey girlies! Time for another haul…

When the haul is over,  the influencer turns the camera off and throws her new items into a huge pile of clothes.

SUPER:     New: 1.3B kWh of energy USED.

We hear a record scratching sound and the previous haul reverses. The haul restarts, but this time the influencer is less over the top.

GIRL:     Hey folks! Got a new haul here from ThredUp…

The influencer starts going through the clothes.

GIRL:           Wow, just as high quality as brand new clothes...

SUPER:      ThredUP: 1.3kWh of energy SAVED.

ENDTAG:    ThredUP. #CHOOSEUSED.

“Water Used, Water Saved.” :30

An exaggerated influencer pops into the frame and begins her haul. She pulls out items of clothes from an unmarked bag with little regard.

MAIREAD:          Hey guys, I’m back with another haul

Throughout the short haul, Mairead makes it clear that she doesn’t care much about her newly purchased clothes and how disposable they are to her. A freeze frame bring her haul to an end.

VO:             A new pair of jeans uses 283 gallons of water

SUPER:             283 gallons of water

VO:             What if your next haul saved that water instead?

We hear a record scratch as the clip plays in reverse, soon revealing a second haul.

This time, the influencer is less over the top as she goes into her ThredUp haul.

MAIREAD:           Hi guys! Happy Friday! I’m back with another ThredUp haul!

She excitedly goes through her items. This influencer is visibly more invested in her clothes and clearly cares for them. She ends the haul focused on the jeans and how they may have started as someone else's but they’re new to her.

ENDTAG:             ThredUP. Used to save.
